grant: a gift of land or rights given by the government.
jurisprudence: the science or philosophy of law.
juxtaposed: put side by side.
philosophy: a system of thinking for guiding one’s life.
pragmatic: concerned with practical consequences.
regulations: rules.
Pre-Viewing Focus

1. Discuss how Hispanic farmers felt about their land.

Answer: The Hispanic farmers were proud of their farms. They owned communal grazing land and worked together as a community.

2. Use information from the video and prior knowledge to predict what other attractions, in addition to the fertile land, will draw people to the San Luis Valley.

Answer: The mountains in the San Luis Valley were rich in gold deposits.


Post-Viewing Discussion

1. Why did William Gilpin want to buy land in the San Luis Valley?

Answer: Gilpin thought that the mountains that surrounded the San Luis Valley were rich in gold deposits.

2. Why did some Hispanic farmers lose their land?

Answer: New settlers entering the region bought the land grants that the Hispanic farmers thought were theirs. The Hispanic farmers had to go to court to regain their own land. If they could not produce titles of ownership, they lost their land.
