Los Caminos Antiguos

Segment 6: The Road Today

Those who travel Los Caminos Antiguos today are provided opportunities to learn and experience the rich history of the area served by this scenic and historic byway. The history begins with the land. It is the land and its resources that first attracted human beings into the area. It is the land over which many different groups would fight and spill blood. It is the land that continues to hold power over the people and to which dreams continue to be attached.
In addition to the land, the history of the region is about the people who struggled to live from and on the land. Those who care to learn about the people will begin to understand the dreams that brought people to the region. They will learn of the traditions and deeply held cultural values, and the perseverance, faith, and courage, that in the past, as well as today, characterize the people who chose to make the Los Caminos Antiguos region their home. Finally, they might experience the spirit of the past that lives in the hearts of the people of Los Caminos Antiguos and the breeze of freedom that firmly root the people to the present.

The byway has many seasons and colors. In the fall aspen turn golden in vivid contrast to the deep green pines.

“When they looked at the water, the grass, the beautiful area itself, even though it was going to be rough going to settle, I think they thought of it as almost paradise.”
